/ AI for law firms

AI for law firms, without your client files leaving the building.

The obstacle to AI in a law firm is rarely enthusiasm. It is that most AI works by sending information to another company's computer, and privileged client material is the last thing a firm can put there. Orchyn builds systems that run inside your own network instead.

Confidentiality is an architecture problem, not a policy one

A supplier can promise to handle privileged material carefully. That promise depends on the company continuing to behave well, on its terms not changing and on its subprocessors being what the contract says they are.

If the model runs on your servers, the question changes shape. There is no transfer to disclose, no processor to audit and no connection whose terms anyone can revise. That is the same answer whether it is asked by a client, an insurer, the SRA or your own risk partner.

The full position is on the on premise AI page.

Where the time actually goes

None of these are legal problems. They are operational ones sitting inside a legal practice, which is why they persist: they are nobody's specialism and everybody's afternoon.

Matter files assembled by hand

Correspondence, contracts, attendance notes and disclosure sit across email, a document management system and somebody's desktop. Building the current picture of a matter means a fee earner searching four places and trusting their memory for the fifth.

Deadlines tracked in parallel systems

Court dates, limitation periods and undertakings live in a case management system, a diary and a spreadsheet that one person maintains. The risk is not that the system is wrong. It is that nobody can see all three at once.

The same document drafted from memory

Precedents exist but finding the right one takes longer than starting again, so the firm slowly accumulates versions nobody owns and no one is certain is current.

Time recorded after the fact

Work is reconstructed at the end of the day or the end of the week. What gets lost is not the big pieces, it is the six minute increments that were real and are now unbillable.

Where the system stops

A model is used where judgement over messy input is genuinely needed: reading an unfamiliar document layout, classifying correspondence, matching a document to a matter. Everything with a legal or commercial consequence stays with a person.

  • →It does not advise, and it does not assess whether a clause is acceptable
  • →It does not decide whether a matter is ready to file or serve
  • →It does not close a deadline, give an undertaking or approve a bill
  • →Every output records the document it came from, so any conclusion can be checked

This is the house position across every Orchyn build: AI assisted, never AI executed. Automation removes the work, not the accountability.

Questions a risk partner will ask

01Where would client confidential information be processed?+

Inside your own network, on your own servers. In a standard Orchyn build nothing is sent to us, to a model provider or to a data centre in another country. For a firm holding privileged material, that is a structural answer rather than a contractual one: there is no transfer to disclose because there is no transfer.

02Would the model make legal judgements?+

No, and this is a design boundary rather than a preference. A model is used to organise, classify and locate. Advice, strategy, whether a clause is acceptable and whether a matter is ready to file are decisions for a qualified person. Where an action carries legal or professional consequence, the system prepares and evidences it and a named person makes it.

03Have you delivered a system for a law firm?+

Not yet, and we would rather say so. Our delivered work is in food production, wholesale, logistics, construction, property management, packaging manufacture, private healthcare and professional training. Several of those engagements solved the problems this page describes, document handling, approval trails and deadline chasing, in operations with their own regulatory constraints. If you would rather work with a supplier who has already done exactly this in a legal setting, that is a reasonable position and we will say so on the call.

04Would our data train a model used by another firm?+

No. Your model is yours, tuned to your operation. It learns nothing from anyone else's business and nobody else's system learns from yours. Because the system is not connected to an external model service, there is no route by which your material could be pooled.

05What would this cost?+

A typical Orchyn engagement runs from twenty to one hundred thousand pounds, published up front. What shapes it is the scope, your budget, which we scope to openly, and what the discovery uncovers. If the manual work is small enough to absorb, we will tell you that in the discovery rather than after the invoice.
